Buckwheat groats and pasta [varnishkes] (4 servings)
Side dish, cheap, peasant mealAbout $0.75 or $1 CAD a serving. Another back of the bag recipe here. Carb-heavy and filling but bland if eaten by itself. Keeps for a while in the fridge (a week or so).
Ingredients
- 1 cup roasted buckwheat/kasha (~$1)
- 1/2 package (~200g) farfalle/bowtie pasta (~$1.50)
- 1/4 onion, chopped
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
Steps
- Add kasha, 2 cups of water, and 1 tsp of salt to a pot and bring to a boil. Simmer for 20 min.
- At the same time, boil salted water and cook pasta.
- Once water is gone and kasha is cooked, add some butter or olive oil to coat and set aside.
- Brown onions in some oil, add garlic until fragrant, then add cooked kasha and cooked pasta. Stir and serve.
Add-ins
- Mushrooms (sauté with the onions)
- Parsley or dill
- Squeeze of lemon juice
